Chia seeds have even been called a superfood in recent years. Claims abound about the health benefits, including that they may help us lose weight. But do they really help shrink our waistline and how does it work?
Do Chia Seeds really help is Weight Loss?
There are many results shows on the internet that chia seeds curb our appetite and promote weight loss. The running theory is that since everyone knows chia seeds are filling and high in fiber, they keep us fuller longer. Therefore, they may help prevent overeating.
2 tbsp of chia seeds have almost 10g of fiber. That’s around 40% of the recommended daily intake. Diets that are high in fiber have been linked to weight loss. Eating 30g of fiber daily may help us lose as much weight as if we followed a more complicated diet.
However, there is not only all the good feedback flowing on internet. From the study, 90 overweight or obese adults consumed 25g of chia seeds mixed with water before their first and last meals of the day. Unfortunately, the results showed no impact on body mass, body composition, or disease risk factors.
Besides that, Chia seeds also containing high calories and fat. 2 tbsp have 138 calories and 9g of fat (1g saturated). When used in moderation, chia seeds may help us feel more satisfied and less likely to eat too much. Conversely, if we eat too many throughout the day, we may go over our daily calorie limit. Nothing is good when we overdose them!
Chia Seeds and Heart Health
Chia seeds are often marketed as heart-healthy because, although they are tiny little seeds, they contain high omega-3 fatty acids. However, most of the omega-3 fatty acid in chia seeds is alpha-linolenic acid (ALA).
